Urban landscapes, though often architecturally interesting, often lack warmth or natural interest. Plants add natural beauty, and French botanist Patrick Blanc۪s vertical gardens are a stunning example of how plants can transform a public space. Blanc۪s projects include Mus̩e du Quai Branly along the River Seine and Pershing Hall Hotel in Paris. The construction of the vertical gardens include layers of felt, plastic and metal sheeting which provide a barrier against damaging roots. The plants are fed via a drip irrigation system. Not only is the living sculpture a thing of beauty, it also provides much needed oxygen to counteract polluted urban air.
