Hot In The Hive: Scrimshaw Bangles

Scrimshaw (the folksy art of carving ivory) used to be a way for sailors to pass the time on long whaling expeditions, using pocket knives and whale tusks. These high-fashion bracelets don't have the same backstory, but they're just as coveted by fashionistas as 17th century carvings are by historians.

These bangles, carved from fossilized mammoth ivory, are engraved with everything from Moby Dick quotes to reproductions of New York graffiti. Worn alone or in stacks, they look great with all your casual outfits. We love that they look like family keepsakes at first glance, (especially the ones in fine script), but upon closer examination scream words like, "Do you have any idea who I am?" We just don't recommend wearing the "You're not the boss of me" one to work.

Check Barneys, Moss, and ABC Carpet and Home in NYC, but we're warning you: given the bracelets' cult following and popularity, they've probably run out of the original ivory. Not to worry though: you can order resin versions of the original ivory collection in your choice of white or black online.
