Croatian designer Mala Brajkovic, who launched her first collection in 2005, lived in London and Sydney before opening her flagship boutique in Auckland, New Zealand the same year. But her inspiration goes way beyond border hopping.
The pop culture references throughout Mala's collections are what give them such an offbeat, yet approachable edge. High-waisted shorts, skirts and belted shifts interspersed with graphic prints tell the story of 'Morski & Friends,' Brajkovic's own comic book concept (meet Morski here). Polka dots and true puff sleeves add whimsy and menswear influences such as vests further widen the scope of her appeal. I especially love the tops tucked in to circle skirts worn with ankle boots- it's fifties charm meets nineties cool. The boutique follows the same lines, drawing influence from an eclectic mix of eras and styles. Abstract animal motifs add a surreal, futuristic quality while the architecture and wall hangings offer a glimpse into the past. Of course, I recommend visiting the flagship in person, but if a trip down under down under isn't in the works, you can purchase select pieces online.
