Wednesday night marked one of the most outrageous challenges we've seen thus far on the hit show Project Runway. Heidi is joined by season 4 finalist Chris March, decked out in a crazy drag costume, who explains that this week, they will be designing for drag queens. The designers meet the 'ladies' who will serve as their clients and one by one choose who they wish to work with. The designers are told to go as outlandish and over-the-top as possible and off to work they go.
Some struggled to reconcile their visions with those of their queens, while others breezed through the challenge with ease. Appropriately, one of the word's most famous drag-queens, the one and only RuPaul comes in to guest judge. Ironically, Joe, the token straight guy, took the win for his perfectly executed, wildly creative ensemble. Daniel wasn't as fortunate and the judges, tired of seeing one cocktail dress after the next, gave him the boot. I just spoke to the ousted designer for his take on what went down.Stylehive: What was your initial reaction to this week€™s challenge?
Daniel: I thought it was gonna be a lot of fun, just because all the other challenges were so serious, so it was nice to have something so comical to kind of create a bit humor in the environment. Stylehive: After hearing the judges€™ critiques, did you think you were gonna be the one to get sent home?
Daniel: Yeah I did. I mean I had to collaborate with Annida Greenkard€“the drag queen- and my fears kind of got the worst of me because she didn€™t like sequins, there were certain colors she liked, and she was very, very picky, so I was kind of scared to go as over-the-top as I would have liked to. She has a certain way of how she performs- what she wears when she performs, so I really just wanted to make her happy. I mean I kept on questioning the whole time in the workroom; I was like €˜does it look too much like an evening dress?€™ €˜is it over-the-top enough?€™ So I definitely did let my fears get the worst of me because I really wanted to make her happy.
Stylehive: If you could go back, is there anything you would have done differently with your design?
Daniel: I probably would have done what I originally wanted to do which was a silver lam̩ with a glass crystal and kind of make it dangled and crystaled and really over-the-top and layers and layers and so like a big gown that looks like it۪s encrusted with all these crystals and a metallic lame. I think something like that probably would have been more extravagant for the judges to see. Stylehive: Who do you think should win?
Daniel: I think Leanne, should. She€™s very playful with the way she drapes things and she has a unique vision as far as something that€™s more traditional. A lot of people who design have a very traditional way of looking at things, and I think she has kind of an abstract view on things which is different and it€™s refreshing to see a designer with that perspective.
Stylehive: What can we expect to see from you in the future?
Daniel: I€™m definitely in talks with Wesley in collaborating on a line together, so definitely looking for investors now so probably a line very soon.
