Stylehive got a chance to catch up with Jodi Shays, aka the "Queen Bee of Waxing" and one of Los Angeles€™ leading hair removal specialists. A skilled waxer to the stars, Jodi's specialties include the "Heathrow Express" and "Full Monty."
Huh? Read on to find out what they are, along with who waxes and who doesn't, how much it really hurts, and how celebs hide their identities when they come for a privates session!Stylehive: Painless waxing - fact or fiction?JS: It can be "less" painful. Depends on your hair and skin type. First of all, if you have coarse/thick hair that you have spent many years shaving, then "yes", it is going to be a painful ride your first and perhaps second time. However, once you have waxed a few times, and your hair starts to grow back MUCH thinner/finer, it does get less painful. Stylehive: How should one prep for a bikini wax?JS: Most importantly before a Brazilian Wax, SHOWERS PLEASE!! Appointments straight after the gym are not pleasant for your technician! And, if you can't shower before your appointment, wet wipes come in mighty handy. In order for a Brazilian Bikini Wax to be successful, the hair needs to be about a quarter of inch and 10 to 14 days of growth. The worst possible thing you could do to your bikini line is to wax too soon after shaving. Stylehive: "The Full Monty" (bare) or "Heathrow Express" (Brazilian landing strip), which is most popular?JS: "The Full Monty." I would say about 80% want TFM. Age doesn't matter, either.Stylehive: Do you have any tips to treat stubborn ingrown hairs?JS: Hairs in the "nether regions" are typically curly and coarse. Sometimes when they grow after being waxed or shaved, they curl into the skin instead of growing straight up through a follicle opening. This piercing of the skin is very irritating and the skin reacts by getting inflamed and at times, even infected. Keeping the skin sloughed or exfoliated with a daily application of salicylic acid creams or washing the area with a benzoyl peroxide cleanser can decrease the frequency of ingrown hairs. My salicylic acidproduct "Buzz Off Bumps!" is just one of the products I recommend.Stylehive: How did you get started in the biz?JS: I have always been obsessed with this biz. When I couldn't find anybody who could really do a great job, I started to practice on myself. I got pretty good at it, and then friends started to ask if I could do it on them. I willingly agreed, even doing it for free, because I wanted to get GOOD at this one procedure, which is harder than it looks to perform. It really got out of hand, because then my friends friend's wanted it done too. I gave up my job in the legal field to wax full time when I moved to Los Angeles.Stylehive: How long does a wax usually last?JS: Shavers won't see great results until at least 3 waxes. After a few months of waxing, a good wax should last about 4 weeks. This should get better and better the more you wax. i.e. I have some clients who wax every 6 to 8 weeks now, because they have been doing this so long.Stylehive: Eva Longoria has publicly confessed her love of a good TFM. So fess up, who are some of your celeb clients?JS:I can't ever disclose whose private parts I wax! Most of the time, they come in under a different name, and if they don't, I am asked to sign a
confidentiality agreement by their management company.Stylehive: Aw man!To learn more about Jodi and her services hit her website, Queen Bee Waxing!
