Hair Advice: When Washing Your Hair, Don't Wash The Ends!

You have been told a zillion times not to wash your hair that often. But here€™s something you may not have heard: when you wash it, don€™t wash it all. That€™s right, say bye-bye to that shampoo-and-hair mountain you make on top of your head, because that technique does major damage. So says Allison Burr, a Master Stylist in New York City formerly with Vidal Sassoon and mega-trendy Arrojo Studio, now embarking on opening her own salon called MINT. Allison has worked runway shows for New York Fashion Week, been featured on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and also worked behind the scenes on TLC's What Not To Wear, so she knows her stuff!

She says when washing your hair, concentrate on massaging the scalp. €œA healthy scalp grows healthy hair, and when you shampoo the rest of the hair with too much force, you can break and weaken the hair.€ Hey guys, you can€™t forget that hair is at its weakest when it€™s wet! And by focusing on the scalp, you get just the right amount of shampoo to trickle down the to ends and get them clean without sending them to the guillotine.

And what about conditioner? Your hair type defines the technique. Allison€™s advice: €œIf your hair is oily, you only need to condition the ends. If your hair is dry, condition all over.€ And do condition often, even every day. Moisture keeps hair strong and shiny.

So how to feel clean in between washings? She suggests brushing a little baby powder through dry hair to absorb any oiliness between washings. Even more yummy: invest in a shampoo or scalp brush to use in the shower every day. They are cheap (a Diane Scalp Massage brush costs only 99 cents!), keep your head clean between washings, and feel oh-so-good! Like getting a massage by a thousand tiny fingers.

Good tricks of the trade? We say, absolutely! Now go on, bees, and let your hair down.
