Excite Your Eyes with Vertical Stripes!

Remember when they told us that horizontal stripes made you look fat? By all means, stay AWAY from horizontal stripes! That golden fashion rule was ingrained into our style-psyche for years and years until large black and white horizontal stripes became the next big trend and everyone couldn't wait to walk around looking like pseudo-Parisians everyday, causing cravings for berets and lattes in all innocent on-lookers. The new stripe trend to hit is that of the vertical black and white stripe! Scientists are now saying that vertical stripes can be a frenemy in the "looking fat" department, but runway giants like Gucci, Herve Leger by Max Azria, and Ann Demeulemeester have all embraced the trend. I don't know about you, but I'd rather take fashion advice from the fashion experts! Black and white is a classic contrast combination and is only punched up more by the visually exciting look of vertical stripes. The pattern is versatile and looks great in a lightweight wool for a structured blazer, or a gauzy chiffon for a flirty yet sophisticated day-to-night dress. Vertical stripes are also great for elongating the figure and can make legs look like they go on forever! The trick is to not wear super thin vertical stripes close together. This will cause a visual sensory overload and you run the risk of looking like a wobbly optical illusion. Stripes in varying widths is the most flattering such as wide black stripes and thin white ones for example, or look for stripes that have a slight diagonal tilt to it. If you like what you see but want to take it for a test-drive first, opt for accessories like bags, scarves or hats that feature the vertical stripe pattern. Really be a trendsetter and try vertical stripes with this spring's pop citrus colors!

Lumberjack-Inspired Looks That Don't Recall Wood Chopping... Or Pancakes

When you think of the word "lumberjack," you picture burly men heaving logs and sawing trees in half whilst in the company of a big, blue ox. In my case, I just start singing that one line in Notorious B.I.G.'s legendary song "Juicy" in my head over and over again (you know how it goes: way back/when I had the red and black lumberjack/with the hat to match). Even though those images are ingrained in our heads, the fashion community has embraced this buffalo check pattern in sartorial ways that are hip and cool. We no longer have plain log rolling red and black flannels. Instead, we have buffalo checked messenger bags, hoodies that use black and white instead of red and black and lumberjack shirts that don't say "I'm going to eat a big pile of pancakes before I chop some wood." Here are some lumberjack-chic items that may not make you as strong as the Brawny man, but will make you look like a posh Paul Bunyan.

Agyness Deyn And MGMT Spotted Wearing Jewish Rosaries from Carlen Altman's (JEW)elery Collection

You don't need to be a Torah-toter to love Jewish rosaries. These religion-inspired beads have been popping up on cool kids everywhere (including their fearless leaders Agyness Deyn and the boys from MGMT). The (JEW)elery collection was started by Carlen Altman in her Brooklyn, NY, studio when she was inspired by vintage Catholic rosaries. As a nice little Jewish girl in BK, she couldn't bring herself to wear a cross; hence the birth of Jewish rosaries. Each necklace is adorned with shapes like Stars of David, Hamsa hands and menorah charms. You can choose from an array of styles with names like "Chai Maintenance" for the discerning Jewess or Shiksa, or just a simple one from the "Classic" collection with a Star of David. These unusual necklaces come in both gold and silver with your choice of colored beads (personally I think the Jet shade has a great 80's Madonna feel to it). The most recent collection comes in red, black, and even in-glow-in-the-dark (coolest thing ever!!). These are so kitschy and cool, even goyem like me can sport them! Check out the slideshow to see some of the styles and then head over to the Jewish Rosaries site to claim one (or a few) of your own!

If you take after Carrie Bradshaw and a part of you dies every time you slip off your stilettos, force yourself to give those 4-inch heels a rest! It's time to embrace a more comfy, funky, fresh kind of footwear that you may have previously kept banished to your closet, except for those rare occasions when you'd actually muster up the motivation to hit the gym. With upscale urban trendsetters like Creative Recreation, high-quality imports like Superga, and updated embellished versions of old favorites like Converse, today's hippest sneakers make a strong case against any stigma against them! And with the right accessories, like a cool coordinating scarf, you can easily turn your casual look from frumpy to fly - and still stay comfortable! Check out more sweet sneaker finds in the slideshow - from wild stand-out colors to subtle pastel patterns, there's a hue, height, and shape to satisfy anyone's athletic shoe appetite! You'll think twice about subjecting these sneaks to scuffs by only wearing them for a work-out. Click the slideshow and see these sneaks for yourself!

Hive 5: Bow to the Bow

Today's Hive 5 is dedicated to the bow. Sweet and pretty, bow designs are popping up all over the hive. Bows are the perfect juxtaposition to the rough and edgy look that has made its way from street style to the runways this season. Bows will give you a touch of femininity. There are so many options to choose from with this style. Forget the string and slip on Rachel Leigh's bow ring as a chic reminder; a Maison Martin Margiela wallet with a leather gift bow is a fabulous gift choice, or accent your waist with a bow motif in C Solnicki's bright pink dress. No longer solely for the prim proper prepster, the bow is a sweet way to bright up any look; so try tying it into your look this season. To see these items and many more in the hive check out my SLIDESHOW.

Hive 5: Don't Step on My New Suede Shoes!

Suede, which was originally used to make ladies' gloves, is now all over today's shoe market. From ankle boots to gladiators and pumps it is virtually unavoidable, and I am more than ok with that. Today I'll highlight the best suede shoes popping up in the Hive. Fall for Chloé's bootie pump with a collar overlap, strap on a gladiator ballet flat made available by Free People, sidestep the moccasin craze with a woven slouch boot by Joie, throw on a pair of DaniBlack ankle boots for a runway ready look, or go from day to night in a snap with Rachel Comey's strappy heels. To get your hands on the suede shoe craze check out the slideshow!

Style Trend: Having a Field Day With Floral Prints

From large tropical patterns to tiny calico prints, florals seem to blooming in stores everywhere, and I love it! Summer is the perfect time to experiment with colors and patterns. From high end to bargain basement, there's a floral print for everyone and every occasion. Invited to a pool party? Try a bold tropical themed bikini or tunic. Bridal or baby shower? A prim and proper floral dress works wonders. A day perusing the art galleries? Fit right in with a watercolor print blouse. For the adventurous and daring, try mixing and matching floral prints together or with other patterns just like the designers did on the Spring/Summer runways. Just keep the inspiration and color palate similar while varying the scale of the patterns. Get some more inspiration from my slideshow!

NYFW Trend Alert: Coat Your Legs With Candy Colors

To combat the overwhelmingly dark and somber tone that marked the fall/winter €™08 collections, a lot of our favorite designers added unexpected, playful elements to spruce up their collections. I mean, where€™s the fun in fashion without a few risks and surprises? Some designers threw shades of shimmery gold into the mix for added glitz and glamor, others played with plush purples and other rich jewel tones, most went wild with accessories, and a few took risks by playing with pops of brightly colored legs, by far the most fun and funky way to add a much needed spark.

NYFW Trend Alert: Shades of Purple Dominate Runways

Come fall 2008, all the Teletubbies are gonna be envying Tinky Winky's style. I'm not sure if the credit should go to the Tinks or everyone's favorite dinosaur Barney, but purple was EVERYWHERE this past New York Fashion Week, and will be the shade to crave when fall hits. From electric purple, to pale purple, to plum, to violet, and every shade in between, this snazzy hue is the one thing preventing us all from classifying the fall '08 runway collections and bleak, drab, and dreary.

TrendSpotted: Menswear at New York Fashion Week

Menswear trends continue to get sporty at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Bright colors, sporty stripes, and shorter shorts mark the upcoming trends in menswear for Spring.

While turquoise and reds made bold statements, grey and tan continue to be strong contenders in menswear. The ever-evolving trench was in nearly every collection, updated in new colors and interesting cuts.

The shows also got playful this season. Buckler began its show to the 007 theme song, with a man in a tux carrying a water gun, while Custo took bright colors and patterns to a whole new level.
