Stylehive Scavenger: Love A Lamp

Nothing brightens up a lackluster interior like the perfect lamp. And what does the perfect lamp look like, you ask? Well, it comes in many different shapes and sizes, but it is always artfully designed and often adds just the right touch of whimsy or drama to a room. I dream about lighting fixtures like this one and this one, but sadly they are out of my budget. Of course, stylish lamps need not break the bank, which is why I've hunted down some dazzling lights at affordable prices. Here are some of my favorites:

image

#1 Orion Hanging Lamp

I love the 60s space age feel of this hanging lamp. Just picture multiple Orion lamps hanging at different lengths all around a bubble chair... at only $60 each, that's one dream that may yet come true!

#2 Garland Light

This beautiful pendant lamp designed by Tord Boontje and produced by Artecnica features a metal garland that wraps around the bulb like a flower arrangement. The garland can be extended into any desired shape, and is available in a silver or brass finish. Quite a steal at $76!

#3 3-D Chandelier

Channel a bit of Victorian elegance with this 3-D chandelier from Urban Outfitters. The silhouette mirrors that of an antique candle chandelier, but at $36 it sure beats the expense (and the mess) of the real deal.

#4 Torchiere with Frosted Glass Shade

Storage and lighting in one! This elegant-- and extremely affordable-- floor lamp from Target serves a dual function. Priced at right around $30, it's hard to resist this sweet lamp's delicate tiered shelves and open glass shade.

#5 Book of Lights

This lovely little light, designed by Takeshi Ishiguro for Artecnica, is actually a book! Open the cover to reveal a surprising pop-up lamp that emits a soft ambient glow. At $86, this unusual coffee table book is worth every penny!

Stylehive Scavenger: 5 Steps to Sultry, Smoky Eyes

The sexiest and no fail way to achieve evening glam is with a classic smoky eye (beauties Jennifer Lopez and Katharine McPhee can attest to this). Standard smoldering eye looks consist of pewter or black shadow, smudgy eyeliner, and tons of mascara. The effect is high drama - so don't be afraid to play! Here are 5 simple steps and products to achieve that sultry, sex kitten look.

image

#1 Primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion

The unsexiest thing is mascara and liner running down your face, so prevent such catastrophes with a heavy duty primer. I'm a huge fan of Urban Decay's, which gives a smooth application and extends the life of eyeshadows. Use primer sparingly (one swipe is enough) to ensure fresh, sultry eyes all day (and night).

#2 Shadow: Tarte Peep Show Smokey Eye Palette

Traditional smoky eyes are done in hues of black and pewter, but you can also go colorful with rich purples, greens, or bronzes. Tarte's palette is great for beginners - it has everything you need to achieve the look in one sleek palette. To begin, sweep a medium color on the lid, then use a darker shade on your crease (I like black). Lastly, highlight browbones with a light shimmery nude. The essential to a smoky eye is to blend, blend, blend - so use a clean brush to obstruct any harsh lines.

#3 Eyeliner: Benefit Cosmetics BADgal

Get as close to the lashline as possible, gently dotting with a soft black eyeliner. BADgal is perfect for this - it leaves a nice dramatic line that is also smudgeable. After you're done lining the top, you may want to draw a thin line on your lower lashes for a smokier effect. After, use a Q Tip or smudge brush to soften the look. As a personal preference I also line both the top and bottom of my waterline (inside of lashes) for extra definition.

#4 Eyelash Curler: Shu Uemura Curler

Prep eyes for mascara with an eyelash curler. My ultimate fave is Shu Uemura's, which works for a variety of eye shapes and gives lashes that perfect curl. As a trick, I blast mine under a hair dryer for a few seconds (use a finger to heat test) before using. Think of it as a curling iron for lashes - the effect is fabulous!

image

#5 Volumizing Mascara: DiorShow Mascara

Now that lashes are nicely curled, the last step is a volumizing mascara. I recommend DiorShow for a smoldering "faux" effect. Apply two thin coats on top and one on the bottom (optional) for a dramatic, sultry look. Finish off with a bronze or pale blush, nude lips, and voila! You're ready to hit the town!

Stylehive Scavenger: Workout Clothes You'll Look Great In

So you're finally getting around to that New Year's resolution. You bought a hot new dress a size smaller than you wear. Someone said you look good for your age. Whatever your motivation, it's time to dig out your gym membership card, blow off the dust, and get reacquainted with those muscles that have been on hiatus for the last few months.

Working out doesn't have to mean endless hours in the gym and frumpy athletic clothes any more. Gyms are becoming more woman friendly, with classes from Mommy and Me Yoga to belly dancing, to Stiletto Strength training (yes, I'm serious). With my list of hot workout clothes, get ready to sweat in style! No more excuses!

I love the seaming details of these Stella McCartney running tights, and they're super comfortable with their ClimaCool technology (i.e. smooth, dry, and no skin irritation). There's just something so beautiful about designer clothes for under $100!

#2 Prana Sports Bra for $38

This Prana sports bra is a personal favorite of mine because of it's sleek design and it's environmental impact. #5 Nuala Chapora in Black/Blush for $145

For all you trendy yogaites out there, look no further than super model and yoga superstar Christy Turlington's collaborative line with Puma, called Nuala, for the hottest zen fashion. Her collection was inspired by classic ballet wrapping and the whimsy of le cirque. My favorites are these soft leather Chapora workout shoes with embedded magnetic inserts known to revitalize and aid circulation. If you are loving these sneaks as much as I am, check out the "Christy" Yoga Bag too!

Scavenger: Be Your Basics

The basic tee shirt was once an incredibly necessary, but often overlooked wardrobe staple. No longer. Take the white v-neck, for example. It€™s the epitome of casual cool paired with jeans and a long necklace, and looks effortlessly chic under a crisp blazer. It lets you shine, instead of your clothes.

So whether you collect them all at American Apparel or drop $330 for one by The Row (not that we€™re judging), never forget that basics have never looked so good. (And you ALWAYS look good in them.)

image

#1 James Perse crewneck tee

The thought of spending almost $40 on a tee might seem a bit ridiculous- but only to those who haven€™t tried on one of James Perse€™s basics. The fit is unparalleled and the tops won€™t lose their shape, wash after wash.

#2 American Apparel sheer jersey short-sleeve v-neck tee

Vertically integrated manufacturing and sexy basics work well together, as you can see from these v-necks. The sheer jersey material makes the tees perfect on their own and light enough to layer.

#3Nation ltd. Basic v-neck tee

Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson swear by them, and you can (and will) too. These are not too fitted, but just loose enough for that easy, casual look.

#4 Bop Basics burnout crew

Shopbop quality and style, all rolled into one fabulous little tee. How can you possibly go wrong with one of these? They€™re available in three versatile neutrals, and are perfect for late summer and even into fall.

#5 Design History black puff sleeve t-shirt

Slightly puffed short sleeves and a scoop neck add a little something extra to this basic tee. The length is also flattering and the sides are ruched for the perfect fit.

Stylehive Scavenger: Cute Cosmetic Cases!

Cosmetic cases are usually tucked away in a much larger bag, so we€™re the only ones that really see them. Maybe that's why its so important to us that they be as attractive, or more attractive, than the bag we hide them in. It's our little, special secret. Also, our makeup does nice things for us all the time, so keeping it happy is just he right thing to do. We particularly love these plastic ones from Loopdeloop, as well as these other great hive finds:
