Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen To Design Juniors Line For JCPenney

It's no secret that everything the Olsen twins touch turns to gold, whether it's a trend or a business endeavor (and they've proven themselves to be more than successful in the latter- just look to The Row and Elizabeth & James, plus their shoe and jewelry lines). Their latest move? They've signed a deal with JCPenney to design a juniors brand called Olsenboye. Clearly aimed at the younger crowd, the line will contain denim, tees, and other casual looks including shoes and bags, all priced between $20 and $50. It'll be available in 50 JCPenney stores and online starting November 6th! If you can't wait until then and are in the NYC area today, stop by Washington Square park and catch the Olsenboye Treat Truck where you can preview the collection. Betsey Johnson Given the National Arts Club's Highest XOX

What do you give a woman who has been a style icon for almost 50 years, can call Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, and the Velvet Underground her intimate friends, and has spawned a fashion empire that remains beloved by women of almost every generation today? If you're the National Arts Club in New York City, you just add to the list of designer Betsey Johnson's superlatives by bestowing on her your highest award, the Medal of Honor for Lifetime Achievement. And so it was that NYC's cultural and fashion glitterati gathered on Tuesday, October 3 to fete one of fashion's timeless dynamos. People from all walks of life filled the room: young/old, white/black, bookish/fashion die-hards. Yet everyone wearing a Betsey frock--or tights, or perfume, or shoes, which people were not shy about disclosing-- possessed the spirit and energy that infuses all of Betsey's creations: fearless, vivacious, and just plain fun. The designer herself bounded around the room greeting old and new friends, and there was more than one request for her to complete one of her signature cartwheels (she declined). With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Johnson a breast cancer survivor, special attention was also paid to her substantial contributions in the fight against the disease. Surrounded by family, colleagues, and tons of admirers, Betsey was clearly floored and over the moon. "It doesn't get better than this," she said. For us, too, Betsey--thank you and xox! Check out the slideshow for flicks from Betsey's award night.

Donald Fisher, Founder Of Gap Inc, Dies

Don Fisher, the retail legend who along with his wife Doris, founded a single blue jeans store on San Francisco's Ocean Avenue and eventually, an entire clothing empire, passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was 81. His achievements transcended the retail category: as the store, which stocked Levis, records, and tapes grew into a now $15 billion global business, Fisher maintained a focus on thoughtful expansion and integrity, a sign that his philanthropic goals were just as important to him as his entrepreneurial ones. The road to The Gap was full of ups and downs, but success came in 1969 when he realized the need for an entire store devoted to pants, which was then the fastest growing classification-- soon after, the business plan was laid down and the first store opened, and the public loved what they saw. A lack of retail experience did not hinder Fisher in the least-- it only left room for more innovation. The Gap label was launched a few years later-- never before had a brand name used its store name. Philanthropy played a large role in his ventures. He founded Gap Foundation to help people in underserved communities worldwide grab hold of their futures, and was the force behind two of the most well-known and successful education reform organizations, Teach For America and the Knowledge Is Power program. As avid collectors of art, the Fishers contributed a great deal to SFMOMA, including their own collection. His achievements and contributions to San Francisco and the global community are truly infinite, and he will never be forgotten!

Uniqlo To Team Up With, Gulp, Disney?

Uniqlo has been trying hard to keep up with the Topshops and H&Ms of the world lately by announcing new initiatives and designer collaborations. Yet, the Japanese retailer seems to be lacking in direction-- last week's debut of its Jil Sander collection didn't quite live up to fab collab standards. Now Uniqlo has just announced that they've teamed up with Walt Disney to release a line of Disney-themed products next month. Is this move to satisfy Japanese American fandom? Uniqlo trying to be ironic? Or, the more likely scenario... an attempt to produce something cute. Or, as they say in Japan, kawaii. Want to know more about this Uniqlo/ Disney venture? Meet Manolo, Mingle With The Olsens, And Party With Opening Ceremony At Fashion's Night Out!

Any fashion week brings with it a slew of star-studded parties, but next month's spring 2010 shows in NYC will be ushered in by an absolute extravaganza- Fashion's Night Out. The September 10th event will feature everything from model and celebrity appearances to in-store events and meet and greets, and of course, shopping! It's being put on by Vogue, the CFDA, NYC & Company, and the City of New York, with the idea that engaging the city in the fun and excitement of fashion and shopping will restore consumer confidence once again. So what can we expect? For starters, Anna Wintour will appear at Macy's in Queens (wow, who would've thought) to sign t-shirts (again, wow), Andre Leon Talley will host a game at Bergdorf's. Coco Rocha will be doing a special performance at DKNY, Sasha Pivovarova will be showing her art at Henri Bendel, and it-girls like Harley Viera-Newton and Alexandra and Theodora Richards will be DJ-ing about town. Want more? Manolo Blahnik will hold a meet-and-greet, Oscar de la Renta will sing, Opening Ceremony is having a block party, and Chanel will have a customized handbag studio! Still not excited? Mark your calendars: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will be bartending at Barneys- is it bad that I want someone to order a black and Tanner? Parisian Design House Cop Copine To Open In SF's Union Square Tomorrow!

When news gets out that a chic overseas design house is moving stateside, you almost immediately assume NYC. And most of the time, you're right- just look to Uniqlo, Topshop, Muji, even last fall's Colette pop-up shop for proof. NYC doesn't get to have all the fun though- San Francisco's credibility as a city with a fashion scene to watch is on the rise, the most recent example of which is Cop Copine of Paris, the avant-garde French design house that's opening its first U.S. boutique in SF's Union Square tomorrow. Their summer collection is full of breezy tops, structured dresses, unexpected cuts, and wonderfully layered pieces in an assortment of mix-and-match neutral hues. Also not to be missed- their outerwear, most notably the raincoats- they're just the thing to brighten up this so-called "summer" we've been having in SF (and pretty much the only way we'd ever be seen buying coats in August). Visit Cop Copine tomorrow at 343 Powell St (at Post St.) and preview the collections at cop-copine.com.

Rumor: Uniqlo Taking Over Gap?

It's no secret that the Gap has been struggling in recent years to keep up profits and keep the attention of buyers. The denim giant may be doing worse than we thought because rumors have begun circulating that Uniqlo is considering purchasing the business. While at first this takeover would seem unlikely (Uniqlo's presence in the United States is nowhere near as strong as the Gap's), Uniqlo actually comes from a rather strong empire called Fast Retail, founded in 1984 by Tadashi Yanai. Yanai reportedly has been looking for new ways to break into the American fashion market. So what would a Gap under Uniqlo regime look like? We have to admit that we'd be interested to find out.

Michael Jackson: "The Way You Make Me Feel"

Yesterday's news that Michael Jackson had passed away was a shock to not just the music world, but the world as a whole. Though headlines in recent years painted the entertainer as bizarre and reclusive, fans of the King of Pop will remember him as a superstar whose unparalleled talent and dedication to charity made him a living legend and an icon of our generation. Ask anyone which Michael Jackson hit is their favorite and you'd be hard pressed not to find someone who doesn't list at least five. His dancing was infectious, and his music videos were unforgettable-- in all of his uniqueness, he managed to unite us all. Let's go back to "The Way You Make Me Feel" from 1987's "BAD"-- who could forget the skintight black dress, the big hair, and the high heels? And of course, those moves. He will truly be missed, but his influence will remain forever.
