Fashionindie Week Brooklyn: New York Couture Brings Down the Mansion!

Last night's New York Couture party and fashion show at Mansion was two super hot floors of style scenesters who came to see Cassie Kogler and her models rock it on the runway, and rock it they did! DJ Benny Blanco spun up a storm as the crowd went wild for Kogler's unapologetically outrageous punk-rock-meets-prima-ballerina creations. Oversized tutus, hoop skirts, metallic leggings, and brightly printed dresses were topped off with big hair and glittery makeup, and the models (who partied with the crowd before the show) were easily having as much fun as the partygoers themselves- but would you really expect anything different from a designer who puts panda faces on dresses? Didn't think so!

Fashionindie Week Brooklyn: Gossip Girl Nights at Pop Lounge Featuring Angel Lust!

Last night I headed over to Gossip Girl Nights, appropriately held at a little Upper East Side spot called Pop Lounge. The weekly, fashionindie-sponsored event is the kind of thing that makes me wish I lived in NYC, or at least visited more. Every Monday a different designer from the show is featured. This week's event showcased Angel Lust by Kristen May, an adorable line of headbands and bows that are perfect for turning up the charm on your sweet (and even your not-so-sweet) outfits. The retro-style lounge was ideal spot for indulging in cocktails and appetizers and a few OMFGs, naturally, and when the episode ended I had a chance to chat with the incredibly sweet Kristen herself, along with a few of her friends. Topics ranged from vintage shopping to blogging to grandmas (yup), and my way out i was treated to a gift bag filled with chocolates from the Chocolate Bar at Bendel's (where Kristen's pieces have been showcased) and a few other girly treats. Fashionindie Week Brooklyn: Alisha Trimble, For Girls Who Just Want to Have Fun

Okay, so it wasn't exactly love at first sight- getting there was rough, between puddle-jumping in Miu Mius and having my cab driver leave me in front of a fishy (literally) Chinatown market mid-storm, but my mood brightened once I opened the door to Catherine Slip Studios, where Alisha Trimble's spring/summer 2009 collection was to be presented. Awash in a sea of reds and pinks, models posed while the crowd sipped wine and snapped pics. The collection was overwhelmingly cute in a half "Alice In Wonderland," half menswear-inspired way, with a sprinkling of hearts for good measure. I especially loved the tuxedo-style dresses with multiple misplaced bow ties - it was a fun spin on the 'borrowed from the boys' trend that took hold of so many collections this season. All in all, plenty of cute party dresses for the girl who just wants to have fun.

Fashionindie Week Brooklyn: San & Soni Preaches Reinvention, and I'm Converted!

I stopped by the rooftop bar at NYC's Library Hotel to get a sneak peek at San & Soni's Spring '09 collection show for Fashionindie Week Brooklyn. My initial reaction - I felt like I had just walked into my favorite store and fallen in love with it all over again! (Subsequent reactions included relief in the form of water, appetizers on sticks, and complimentary mani/pedis.) The line was a marvel, with sumptuous neutral and jewel-toned fabrics woven into the dreamiest of dresses and separates. I spoke to one half of the design duo behind San & Soni, Inderjeet, who described the contemporary/high-end collection as "downtown yet sophisticated, for the girl who is always reinventing herself." And with only three seasons behind them, San & Soni have done an incredible amount of reinventing of their own. The pieces were trendy, yet classic (think rompers with pleats and piping, and easy-fitting black dresses with unexpected accents). The line's currently available at TG170 in NYC as well as select boutiques in LA, Miami, and Dallas, but we're sure you'll be seeing it in high-end department stores before long.

Fashion Week Preview: They're Doing One in Brooklyn, Too!

I've been to Brooklyn more times than I can count. And with Fashion Indie Week BROOKLYN literally just around the corner, there will be plenty of buzz to keep me hanging around this borough even as the rest of NYC gears up for the Spring '09 NYFW shows. The Fashion Indie Media production will kick off with a "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" fashion show on September 2nd where models will make the Brooklyn Bridge their runway for the night. Wait, were you really expecting tents? This isn't your ordinary fashion show, and with designers like Brooklyn Royalty, Love Brigade, Zulema Griffin, Mandate of Heaven, New York Couture and San & Soni showcasing collections, Fashion Indie Week is sure to hold its own amongst the fashion and frenzy the week will surely bring.
