Summer Must-Haves From Fresh Independent Designers!

I'll admit it -- I've spent the last four months hidden away inside my Toronto apartment just waiting for the warm weather again. Time not wasted though -- I've been keeping busy head-starting the season by staking out my summer wardrobe! After all, who doesn't love online shopping? With careful consideration I was able to sift through all of my options and weed out my absolute summer must-haves from the pages and pages of things I loved but could realistically live without for now (I guess). If you haven't given yourself the same ahead-of-the-season jump start on your summer shopping, don't fret! There's still some time to get some advanced shopping done online. And hey, you could also always last-minute shop online from the poolside! Personally, I'm prepared to spend most of my summer outdoors, so I chose some key pieces that should carry me through both in style and with comfort. For further inspiration, check out the slideshow for some Designers Connect-approved summer staples and get ready to enjoy the sunshine with fashionable friends!

Wear A Dress By An Emerging Indie Designer For The Holidays!

This holiday season, impress your friends with inexpensive and fair trade designs by emerging independent fashion designers. It's not haute couture (designed just for you), but it's the next closest thing! Besides, it's way more affordable and also supports an amazing fashion concept. Buying independent means the items are not mass-produced, and range from production quantities of sometimes twenty to one hundred pieces made for each style. These independent designers like to keep their collections fresh and current, recycling old styles and moving forward each season. Doesn't the idea of showing up at a party only to find another guest has already arrived wearing your same dress sound so embarrassing? We've put together a quick gallery of our favorite holiday dresses made exclusively by independent fashion designers so you can be sure this won't happen to you. Click on the slideshow to see them all!

Vancouver's Elroy Apparel Is Socially Responsible Streetwear With A Sophisticated Edge

Introducing Elroy Apparel, an independent fashion designer with some great ideas from Vancouver. Elroy Apparel is much more than just another clothing line. The company was developed as a stand against impending environmental destruction. By providing socially responsible, health-conscious women with fashion forward, eco-friendly clothing, we have created an alternative- a beautiful garment with an even more beautiful story behind it. Designer Leanne McElroy creates sophisticated streetwear for the contemporary health-conscious woman who cares not only about what she looks like, but about the story her clothing carries as well. Take a look at these beautiful creations in the slideshow!

Indie Designer Valerie Dumaine Brings Fashion-Forward Looks To Montreal

I have to say, Montreal has really been on the mark over the last couple of years when it comes to fashion and style. As a long time supporter of indie fashion in Canada, I've been noticing a lot of confident new designers launching their fashion-forward clothing companies from this city. Indie trends in fashion are on the upswing, and Montreal fashion designers are at the top of it all! Valerie Dumaine Clothing is a perfect example. Dumaine launched her company in 2004 and it's been an amazing success story that should motivate aspiring fashion designers. Her collections are entirely made in Canada and are now available across Canada and in a few stores in the United States. Indie designers are good to have around-- they're very passionate about what they do. Like Dumaine, many small designers are putting more back into their community by using an artistic approach to the clothing trade, rather than acting as a large profit driven company. I am happy to introduce 10 items from the Valerie Dumaine Fall 2008 line in my slideshow. Enjoy!

Style Star: Eve Kinizo Stars in Toronto's 1st Annual STYLE Show

One of Toronto's newest designers will take part in the 1st annual STYLE Show this fall in Toronto. "STYLE Canada will bridge the gap that exists between Canada's hidden talent and established professionals within the industry, say the organizers. Eve Kinizo's collection "Hip Line By Eve Kinizo" will be part of the show as one of the featured designers and collections in the "Trendy Fashion" category. Opening with a launch event in October, Eve will show select pieces from her Spring '09 collection followed by a fashion show in November where she will show 4 unique pieces that were selected by the jury, specifically for this event. The highlight of the event is the unique Pink Dress, that each designer will put together to be auctioned at the show . We will be doing a follow up posting to show off the winning designer and the "Pink Dress" winner. For more information about the event visit STYLE Canada. Summer Style: Canadian Designers Hike Up The Hemlines (Ironic, No?)

With the hot weather upon us, we started to wonder ... how short is too short? Canadian designers are saying be brave and bare it all to beat the heat! Mini dresses are a must-have for the summer of 2008. Our suggestion-- if you can wear it, bare it! Noticing trends for this summer, I'd say that a lot of us are in agreement that there really doesn't have to be a time and place to hike up the hemline. From cocktail events to summer weddings, the mini dress is here all summer long. I love the little mini styles that are hitting shops this summer. And even better is to see that Canadian designers are staying competitive with their daring designs. Out of hundreds of styles, here are our top five favorite short dresses, from casual to cocktail, by five up-and-coming Canadian designers. Enjoy!

Eco Style: 10 Bamboo and Soy Products, I Mean Pieces, From Canada

Eco-friendly fashion has made its mark with many top Canadian designers. Many fashion designers are reducing impact at the source by making conscious decisions to use more environmentally-friendly materials. Yes, we know...there's been a lot of hype about organic and sustainable fabrics. But wait, there's more! If you haven't actually felt the fabric bamboo or soy, now definitely is the time. Take a look at our SLIDESHOW of top 10 picks by up and coming socially responsible independent designers from Vancouver all the way to Montreal. Enjoy!

Inside Fashion: Behind the Scenes of a Look Book Shoot!

Ever feel like grabbing a photographer, your best model, some designer clothing, and heading down to the Toronto waterfront early in the morning for a full day fashion shoot? I knew you did. That's what I did with Greenbaum Clothing! Here are the photos from the Greenbaum Spring/Summer catalog shoot along the Toronto Waterfront. All of the beach shots were done at Kew Beach, Toronto, Ontario Waterfront. The fashion shoot started at about 5am. It looks like a beautiful European sunset on a deserted beach, but it's actually sunrise mid-week. It was such a beautiful day! The harbor was the foot of Bathurst Street, across from the Island airport. Start time was 5am and the designer, model and photographer followed the sun around the port for the shoot. Click SEE SLIDESHOW for some great shots from the designer's look book!
