Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ontfront

Initially started in 2005 as a platform for young designers and artists, Ontfront didn't take long to get swept up by the fashion scene. The line found its niche in a creative and functional fusion of urban streetwear and professionalism known as Sidewalk Tailoring. Nowadays, Ontfront is a statement and huge success within the Amsterdam fashion and club scene. National and international fashion-forward celebrities like Emmy Award nominated DJ Diplo and Musiq Soulchild are dressed in some of their designs. For the Spring/Summer 2010 collection that Ontfront showed at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, they continued to impress with the theme "Tonight is the Knight," which was evident by their brawny statures and iron gloves. The diverse collection was said to be inspired by the brave medieval knight, with the sophistication of comfortable heroism for the modern-day cavalier. With a collection of fitted tees and polos, button-down shirts and tailored suits, the designs certainly broke the mold of modern menswear with its fresh and edgy details. Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Replay

Picture a bohemian and cosmopolitan traveler who is always on the move, loves comfort but also pays great attention to detail. For the Spring/Summer 2010 season Replay's collection consists of jersey which is no longer just casual but also comes in an urban version which fits into everyday life, in all its various guises. In terms of denim, the new cuts and prefabricated waistbands give a tailored look to the silhouette, developed with super slim lines or generous flares for women - without forgetting the boyfriend fit of course - and slim/worker/anti-fit styles with treatments and finishes including super-bleach, rinse, destroyed, three-dimensional and coated for men. The T-shirt graphics are also part of the urban context and transmit clear, positive messages of peace and love using a graffiti/writing effect. The colour palette ranges from neutral shades to brights for the menswear, while the women's wear focuses on shades of mandarin, peach, papaya, passion fruit and watermelon. Studs on bikinis, leather jackets, denim jackets and dresses are being used frequently, to give this collection a rough but playful feel. Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: SuperTrash

Born in Los Angeles from the socialite mind of Ava Riley and brought to Amsterdam in cooperation with Olcay Gulsen, the SuperTrash collection may exude plenty of Hollywood It-Girl glamour at heart, but it has undoubtedly adopted plenty of Dutch flavor. The label showed at this season's Amsterdam International Fashion Week in a crowded venue with former supermodel Janice Dickinson as a special guest sitting front row. The collection was split into three themes: Animal Jungle, Blossom and Kaleidoscope. The first was inspired by all imperfections of nature, such as animal prints and flowing lines, while the second theme conjured up spring-like elements- elegant, glamorous, and a little naive. Kaleidoscope was all about colors with bright tunics and caftans. Overall it was very commercial, very feminine, and a very playful display of fashion that SuperTrash pulled off well. Take a look at the slideshow for a glimpse of the collection!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Lichting 2009

The Spring/Summer 2010 Lichting runway presented the best of each of the seven Dutch fashion academies including the likes of Nathanya Zwart, Erna Einarsdottir, Kai Salomon, and Bregje Cox, among many talented others. As a result, the display turned out to be one of the most spectacular and raved-about catwalk shows of this season's Amsterdam Fashion Week. The unique platform was founded to bridge the gap between Dutch fashion academies' most promising students and the professional fashion industry, and the students' work showed innovation far beyond their years. All of the collections captured of-the-moment elements found in fashion across the globe. The most impressive works were the ones that were least commercially wearable, including Ratna Ho's collection which was inspired by tribal tattoos, resulting in curvy patterns, pleated skirts and tops made of see-through materials. Bregje Cox was inspired by big city skyscrapers featuring cut-out dresses and patterns meant to imitate the look of an aerial road map. Manon Boertien used her positive memories of religion and spirituality and sunlight-reflecting crystals as inspiration, boasting bold shapes and prints. Take a look at the slideshow for some of the show's unforgettable highlights!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2010: Individuals By AMFI

Students of Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) showed their seventh collection for the school's label "Individuals." The young designers presented a collection called "LaLaLa," a title that perfectly described a series of fascinating pieces. Besides the prints with LaLaLa, it was a collection with a true LaLaLa attitude. Strong and soft looking outfits were mixed and included sharp looking artisan white jackets with big shoulders. Some were knee-length, looking beautifully powerful. The Margiela-esque corsets made of leather ice skates in skin tones were attached to soft shirts, or mixed with skirts creating a confident look without being too severe. The golden leggings looked like armor. All pieces were in soft colors- eggshell, nude, off-white- which gave the strong outfits an air of lightness. Sheer tops and pleated blouses covered more rigid pieces, making the outfits look less serious and more femininely whimsical. Evening dresses looked elegant, done in flowing materials. This collection proved that hard-edge fashion can be comfortable and fragile at the same time.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ilja Visser

While designer Ilja Visser juggles three different labels at once, she manages to convey one overall cohesive message that spans across all three innovative lines: easy sophistication. For this year's Amsterdam International Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2010, she focused on presenting this theme while showing off all three unique labels. The three collections -- "Ilja" (couture), "Ready To Fish" (business line), and "Valizz" (affordable fashion) -- each had a clear target audience, yet all managed to have that relaxed, fluid silhouette and a soft color palette. Valizz looked very wearable and appropriately commercial with soft pastels, fluid fabrics and classic basics like simple jackets, jeans and wide trousers. Ready-to-wear< consisted of dresses, jackets and skirts in softer colors and faded prints. Couture by Ilja boasted a variety of extreme volume in dresses but also through some chic pieces in a summery tweed. Love what you see? Good news: next year she will open her first boutique in Amsterdam! Check out the slideshow for some of the runway highlights!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2010: Elsien Gringhuis

This has been Elsien Gringhuis' first show at Amsterdam Fashion Week that she presented individually. Gringhuis studied at Artez in Arnhem and works for G-Star Raw denim at the moment. The collection she showed at AIFW 2010 looks rather strict, with straight lines and a minimal, clean cut silhouette, in addition to lots of shiny fabrics with very well made details. "Focus" is the theme of her collection, a collection about all the stress and chaos we go through all day and the need to focus on what really matters and what makes a difference in our day-to-day lives. Although it's not certain if she will produce her collection (she is still looking for ateliers) you can buy a real Gringhuis soon at Hema (www.hema.nl). She won the Hema design contest with a raincoat she made from biological cotton and rubber coating. Click the slideshow to see her show at Amsterdam International Fashion Week!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week: Michael Barnaart van Bergen

Designer Michael Barnaart van Bergen released his first pret-a-porter collection at Amsterdam International Fashion Week €˜09 with a handbag line alongside his couture pieces. His ready-to-wear collection is just as sophisticated, luxurious and classy as his couture is known for. His collection is called "L€™Hiver Brulant" and is inspired by elegant, ambitious woman with international flair. Barnaart van Bergen presented a classy look, in which femininity played a purest role. Refined fabrics, graphic compositions, expressive colours-mostly orange- and a clean silhouette underline his design signature. In January 2008, the Dutch fashion media was introduced to Michael Barnaart van Bergen, as he showed his first collection while participating at the C€™est Brilliante show at AIFW. He had presented a couture collection made of paper, inspired by the perishableness of fashion, which granted him the status of highly promising talent. Numerous events and special projects followed, as the popularity of his designs was recognized by many. With his new collection, Barnaart van Bergen impressed the audience and received a huge applause followed by a standing ovation.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week: Addy van den Krommenacker

Addy van den Krommenacker's Winter 2009 collection is inspired by memories of journeys, which the Dutch designer made all over the world for his well known fashion shows. Beautiful prints on silk chiffon and organza, thinking of New York, London, Rajasthan and Moscow, they reminds you of a voyage into the past. Addy Van den Krommenacker carries out a sophisticated and feminine concept, where sensual transparency and fabric layering draw attention to shapely silhouettes. Besides his preference for the fifties which is reflected in his designs, he is now inspired by the eighties. The use of a broader shoulder width comes from the power look from that period. The inspiration for his new collection is a combination of these two decades. Lace once again plays an important role in his collection. For eveningwear he designed his signature featherlight chiffon dresses as well as voluminous organza skirts with styled organza blouses. Already famous as a designer for Dutch celebrities, Addy van den Krommenacker€™s first collection, presented in 2001, received favorable reviews from the press and aroused tremendous public interest. In 2008 his collection was showed during the final runway show for the popular television show "America€™s Next Top Model," to be aired in 130 countries all over the world. He also designed a dress for host and producer Tyra Banks. Van den Krommenacker€™ dedicates this collection to one of his favorite singers, Duffy.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week: Monique Collignon

Monique Collignon is one of Holland€™s top designers. She knows better than anyone how a woman likes to see herself: sexy and daring, yet also chic. Collignon is inspired by the young and sophisticated working girl with a rich social life. She has been producing a ready-to-wear line in addition to haute couture collections. This Autumn/Winter €˜09/'10 collection comes in 3 color themes and 60 styles. Daytime dresses that are also suitable after working hours-, elegant suits with skirts, trousers and stylish cocktail and evening dresses- as always this collection, which also has many tops, is ultimately feminine. The collection has a chic, young and relaxed feel, partly as a result of exciting blends of materials in petrol blue, magenta, olive and golden beige. It goes without saying that this unmistakably "Collignon" collection contains a great deal of black and white. Her design is the constant development of her ideas, impressions and emotions. Her inspiration can be found everywhere: street scenes, architecture, a good book, music, art, and travel experiences. During the creative process she first allows herself to be guided by her individual wishes, which are subsequently strengthened by playing with technical aspects and fabrics. The clientele she appeals to with her haute couture collections is comprised of confident, distinguished women- no trend followers, rather, women in their prime.
