Hot In The Hive: Cook For The Cure

This year, Kitchen Aid is donating a minimum of one million dollars to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Help raise even more donations for the cause by picking up a few of these pretty pink tools and appliances. After all, there's never been a better time for a kitchen overhaul than October: National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Do something good for women everywhere while you take advantage of sales like $30 off a new professional mixer. Replacing your old stand mixer sends $50 to the cause for each stand mixer, $10 for each blender, and 10% of the proceeds from smaller goodies.

How much better will you feel about indulging in your usual midnight ice cream when you scoop it with something that can bring hope for mothers, daughters, aunts and grandmas across the world?

For all the women out there who see themselves rather differently than they did at eight years old, we've found a more age-appropriate pair of mary janes, complete with croc print, spike heels and look-at-me hardware.

With the curved straps snaking up your ankles, there's no mistaking your, ahem, maturity.

And at 4 inches tall, these shoes should definitely be saved for after work.

What: 4" stiletto heeled mary janes in black, croc printed leather

Price: $563.00

Hot In The Hive: Wall-Mounted Wake-Up Call

My mom always told me that my bad posture would eventually catch up to me. On early, achy mornings when I can't seem to reach the kinks in my back, I have to admit- she was right. A quarter-lifetime of slouching and stooping and walking on hard surfaces with archless feet has earned me a collection of back cramps rivaled only by the leg cramps of professional swimmers.

Thankfully, the hive has helped me find the perfect shower tiles for my future house. I plan on installing these suckers at just the right height for kneading the knots out of my back- you know, the ones right along your spine that you'd rather not pay $75 for someone else to deal with.

Rubbing yourself against the shower wall in the morning might seem a bit feline, but hey- it gets the job done. Just make sure you keep that grout nice and sanitary. Bacne is not your friend, especially in sundress season.

Denimista Week: Jean Jackets You Can Wear From NASCAR to Nobu

When it's nippy outside and you've got five minutes to catch the last train, a well-cut denim jacket kept by the front door can be a godsend. I'm not talking about those boxy, stiff, stonewashed contraptions. You don't want to look like you go barefoot in gas stations or anything, right? Right.

Here's to investing in the other luxury denim: a jacket that's beautifully updated enough to wear with anything from khakis to a skirt to a polo dress.

#1 Charmer Jacket in Zinc by Deener

Classic tailoring never goes out of style. This answer to the staple casual jacket is slim and fitted, in a dark blue rinse that's casual enough for weekends, but just dressed-up enough for dinner.

#2 Anthropologie's Ruffled Denim Jacket

I love the sweet ruffles on this summer-to-fall jacket. Throw it on over a colorful top with a chunky necklace and keep warm in style!

#3 Isaac Mizrahi for Target® Denim Jacket

Sharp enough for work, this denim blazer looks great with high-waisted slacks. I love the one-button closure; it's just enough to accentuate your waist, making the menswear trend a little more feminine. Hurry- it's on sale now!

#4 Marc by Marc Jacobs Pearl Grey Denim Jacket

80's throwback with a good serving of badass. I especially love the zippered pockets and tiny lapel compartment- because you never know when you'll have to stash something really good. ; )

#5 BCBG Max Azria Denim Suit Jacket

The velvet detailing and feminine cuffed sleeves on this girly girl jacket are a whimsical departure from everyday denim jackets. I love it with all kinds of skirts- from floaty crinkled cotton to sharp-pleated wool.

Hot In The Hive: Like Peas in A Pod

I'm so tired of standard pillar candles and tea lights. I almost feel like it's not worth the trouble of finding a match and watching for potential fire disasters if the source is just a boring old taper from the drugstore. Thank goodness for online stores like Found, where we found (ha ha ha) this pea pod candle.

This beautiful holder is detailed down to the pod's wrinkled sides and top stem scroll, making it an adorable centerpiece for your table. You can even order extra peas to put in it at just $6 for three! Good thing, too: I see myself using this wax wonder over and over.

Tip: when you have to chop onions, shallots or garlic, try lighting a candle or two (or even a burner on a gas stove) next to your work surface. The flame will burn the sulfides that the onion releases before the sulfides can hit the moisture in your eyes and make sulfuric acid (the reason why your eyes would ordinarily water).

And what better set of candles could there be for your kitchen than this one?

Hot In The Hive: Modern Salt and Pepper Shakers From CB2

For once-a-year house guests and nice dinner parties, that I Love Lucy salt and pepper shaker set just won't do. Lucille Ball's mug captured in Lucite looks kinda tacky next to duck a l'orange and spinach gratin. No offense.

These abstract river pebble shapes from CB2, on the other hand, are great against a clean, minimalist tablescape. With this classy, modern set of shakers, you're sure to serve your masterpiece with style, particularly if each guest has her own personal set... not that we're saying your cooking needs salt or anything.

Hot In The Hive: It's a Lamp, Einstein

My physics professor explained the concept of "the Ether" as an antiquated term for the substance around us through which sound and light waves are propelled. Whether designer Patrick Jouin was referring to this pre-quantum physics term (aether), to the organic chemistry compound (as an ether like the Polyethylene Glycol in my makeup) or to something entirely different, we'll never know. What we do know is that we love this lamp.

The Ether Hanging Lamp is a beautiful take on the modern chandelier made of blown murano glass orbs suspended from a polished steel frame. It comes in your choice of two sizes and two lighting options: either four white spotlights or a colored LED.

We love innovative glass designs and this one was both beautiful and whimsical- almost like a dignified jellyfish. Hang it above your dining table or in your reading room for a soft, faceted glow that's sure to earn you some compliments.

From the mirrored underside of the shade to the tiny thumbprints in each glass bubble, every detail has been carefully considered and well-executed in this functional work of art. Just make sure you don't hang it within reach of the kiddies!

Hot In The Hive: Lift and Separate!

The tights trend is still going strong, and thankfully there's hope for those of us with less-than-sculpted legs. If you've got dimples on the wrong cheeks, there's Sassybax brand shapewear.

This company of bras-that-don't-bulge, tummy tuckers and middle-minimizing camisoles has come out with two lengths of leggings that promise to bring up the rear! They're specially knit to pare down thighs, taut the tummy region and lift & separate your butt. No uni-buns here! The black rib knit also thins things out by creating vertical lines that draw eyes up and down, rather than across.

This is a far cry from those notoriously fattening metallic tights that turn normal legs into ham hocks. After an ego-crushing fiasco with some pink foil leggings, I think I'm just about ready to order both lengths of Sassybax.
